Survey Offers Snapshot of Treatment Facilities & Services
 A new SAMHSA survey is available on
the characteristics and locations of
facilities providing alcohol and drug
abuse treatment services around the Nation.
The report, National
Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS):
2006, presents findings from the
2006 N-SSATS.
Specifically,
the survey gives a snapshot of the substance
abuse treatment delivery system, helps SAMHSA and state
and local governments assess the type and level of
services provided in treatment facilities, and provides
information on how widely facilities and programs are
used.
Facility Characteristics
A total of 14,577 facilities completed the initial
survey, with a response rate of 96.5 percent. Of all
surveyed, 13,771 facilities were eligible for this
report and reported more than 1.1 million clients in
treatment on March 31, 2006.
The report’s major findings for facilities providing
substance abuse treatment include:
Facilities operated by private nonprofit
organizations made up the bulk of
the treatment system on March 31,
2006 (59 percent). Private, for-profit
facilities accounted for 28 percent
of all facilities, with the remaining facilities
operated by local governments (7 percent), state
governments (3 percent), the Federal Government (2
percent), and tribal governments (1 percent). Ninety-one
percent of all nonhospital residential
beds, and 90 percent of all hospital
inpatient beds designated for substance
abuse treatment, were in use on March
31, 2006. The majority of treatment
facilities (59 percent) received Federal,
state, or local government funds for
the provision of substance abuse treatment
services. Most facilities (83 percent)
offered specially designed programs
or groups exclusively for specific client types.
Special programs or groups for clients with co-occurring
mental health and substance abuse disorders were
offered by 37 percent of facilities, for adult women
by 32 percent, for adolescents by 32 percent, for
driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or
driving while intoxicated offenders by 31 percent,
for criminal justice clients by 28 percent, and for
adult men by 25 percent.

N-SSATS Objectives
This report presents highlights
from the 2006 National Survey
of Substance Abuse Treatment
Services (NSSATS), conducted
between March and October
2006, with a reference date
of March 31, 2006.
N-SSATS collects data that can be used to analyze
trends in substance abuse treatment services. Survey
data also is used to update information in SAMHSA’s
Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator and to generate
SAMHSA’s National Directory
of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs. (See SAMHSA
