North Carolina Hosts Regional Citizen Corps Conference

Release No.: 2003-02
Release Date: May 28, 2003

Charlotte, NC -- The North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, housed in the Governor's Office is hosting a FEMA regional meeting in Charlotte on Thursday and Friday, May 29-30, at the Charlotte Police/Fire Academy at 1750 Shopton Road. Delegations from Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee will meet to discuss Citizen Corps, the national volunteer initiative focused on personal and community safety and preparedness.

In June 2002, Easley encouraged communities to establish a local Citizen Corps Council to promote this volunteer initiative.

"The goal of Citizen Corps is to have people of all ages participate in making themselves and their communities safer, stronger and better prepared for preventing and handling threats of terrorism, crime and disasters of all kinds," said Easley. "North Carolina currently has 37 communities that have established a Citizen Corps Council."

Representatives from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Sheriffs' Association, US Department of Health and Human Services, Save A Life Foundation, National Fire Protection Association, and National Safety Council will also attend the conference to discuss how their organization is collaborating with Citizen Corps to help people and communities be safer and better prepared for disasters of all types.

The conference is sponsored by FEMA and being paid for with federal funds.
