OSHA Launches Alliance with the Northeast Pennsylvania Manufacturers and Employers Association

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Northeast Pennsylvania Manufacturers and Employers Association have joined forces to promote workplace safety and health for association members, other manufacturing companies and allied businesses. OSHA and the Northeast Pennsylvania Manufacturers and Employers Association officially began their partnership at a signing ceremony today.

OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. Serving more than 250 member companies in Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Northumberland and Schuylkill counties, the Northeast Pennsylvania Manufacturers and Employers Association provides its members information and services to help their businesses remain competitive and to better serve their communities.

"Manufacturing presents its own unique set of safety and health challenges," said Andrew Hedesh, OSHA area director in Wilkes-Barre. "We look forward to working with the association to address those challenges to protect manufacturing workers in Northeast Pennsylvania."

A major goal of the alliance is to provide expertise to association members to enhance workplace safety and health programs. OSHA and the association will deliver a series of five seminars addressing workplace safety and issues: ergonomics; preparing for an OSHA inspection; workplace violence; most frequently cited OSHA standards; and OSHA recordkeeping requirements.

OSHA's Wilkes-Barre area office will represent the agency in the alliance. For more information, call (570) 826-6538. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 240 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
