Through the Alliance, OSHA and AHA are committed to utilizing their collective expertise to advance a culture of awareness, prevention and action while sharing best practices and technical knowledge to reduce death and disability from heart disease and stroke and address employee wellness programs in the workplace. These efforts will include a focus on providing information for individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). The Alliance agreement's goals include:

Outreach and communication:
  • Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's or AHA's conferences, local meetings, or other Alliance partner events such as the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update.
  • Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding AHA's best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by the AHA and through OSHA's or AHA's developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum).
  • Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects on AED, CPR and first aid training programs that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on AED Programs, CPR and first aid training issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

  • October 20-26, 2008: 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. American Heart Association (AHA) and a number of other Alliance Program participants are supporting the 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. Sponsored annually by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Program, the Week’s focus is educating employers, employees and the public about the importance of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful workplace.
  • June 12-15, 2008: CCPRF/ECCU 2008 International Educational Conference, Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada.
    • Nevada-OSHA representatives staffed the Alliance Program exhibit booth during the conference.
  • June 11, 2008: Department of Labor Safety Day, Francis Perkins Building, Washington, DC.
    • Drenda Roberson, Training Network Account Manager, AHA, staffed the American Heart Association exhibit booth during the 2008 DOL Safety Day.
  • May 4-10, 2008: 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The American Heart Association and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety is Good Business." Sponsored annually by American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
    • May 5, 2008: Representatives of the American Heart Association attended the NAOSH Week Kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor. Deputy Assistant Secretary Donald Shalhoub, USDOL-OSHA; and ASSE President, Michael Thompson; were the keynote speakers. Mr. Shalhoub presented "Safety is Good Business" to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health representatives.
  • June 6, 2007: Department of Labor Safety Day, Francis Perkins Building, Washington, DC.
    • American Heart Association representatives staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth, conduct safety demonstrations and distribute safety and health information during the Department of Labor Safety Day.
  • May 6-12, 2007: 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The American Heart Association (AHA) and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2007 NAOSH Week; "All Modes of Transportation." Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
  • June 22-25, 2006: CCPRF/ECCU 2006 International Educational Conference, Disney's Coronado Springs Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
    • Earl Hicks, Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, Tony Gilson, Industrial Hygienist, Region V, Fairview Heights, Illinois, Area Office, USDOL-OSHA, Pat Stark, Safety and Health Compliance Specialist, Florida Consultation Program; William Tomlin, Safety and Health Compliance Specialist, Florida Consultation Program and AHA representatives, John Hayes and Toni Reel, staffed the OSHA and AHA Alliance exhibit booth.
  • May 7-10, 2006: 2006 American Occupational Health (AOHC) Conference, Century Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles, California.
    • May 6, 2006: Dr. Don Wright, Director, Office of Occupational Medicine, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA and AHA representatives, William W. Hammill, MD, Associate Professor, University of Virginia, Director, Cardiac and Vascular Services, Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia and Michael R. Sayre, MD, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, gave a presentation; "New Guidelines for First Aid, CPR and AEDs and OSHA Regulations."
  • May 5-12, 2006: AAOHN 2006 Symposium & Expo, Albuquerque Convention Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
    • May 10, 2006: Elise Handelman, Director, Office of Occupational Health Nursing, Directorate of Science, Technology and Medicine, USDOL-OSHA, and AHA representative, Diane Fendya, RN, gave a presentation, "CPR/AED and OSHA Compliance: What the new guidelines mean to you."
  • January 26, 2006: OSHA Journal Club, Washington, D.C.
    • Dr. Michael R. Sayre, Associate Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, Ohio State University, and Dr. Tom Zoch, Staff Physician, Theda Clark Medical Center, gave a presentation entitled, "American Heart Association New CPR and ECC Updated Guidelines."
  • August 8-9, 2005: American Heart Association CPR/AED HeartSaver Train-the-Trainer Course, Department of Labor, Washington, D. C.
    • Jo Haag and Alan Carrington, AHA representatives, provided AHA CPR/AED Heart Saver Train-the-Trainer course for DOL staff members. After completion of the "train the trainer" courses, DOL staff were able to train their colleagues in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the proper use of automated external defibrillators.
  • September 30 - October 3, 2004: Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update, Hilton New Orleans Riverside, New Orleans, Louisiana.
    • September 29, 2004: Paula White, Director, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation entitled "Joining Forces to Expand our Reach: An OSHA Update," during the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Pre-Session.
    • Dorinda Folse, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region VI, and Sandi Khan, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, USDOL-OSHA, staffed the OSHA/AHA Alliance exhibit booth.
  • July 13-15, 2004: American Heart Association CPR/AED HeartSaver Train-the-Trainer Course, OSHA Training Institute, Arlington Heights, Illinois.
