A veteran woodsman, Bill Butler (left), helps a co-op member split wood on a two-man operator mechanical wood splitter. Butler is a VISTA member assigned in September 1979 to the Maine Citizens Committee for Utility Rate Reform, a group organizing elderly and low-income area residents to convert to wood fuel. Butler also helps to put together municipal firewood projects in Portland and Bangor to make good firewood available and affordable to low-income urban dwellers.
