Industry uses more than one-third of all the energy used in the United States. Most of the energy industry uses is supplied from natural gas and petroleum, with electricity coming in a distant third, followed closely by coal. Certain industries, for instance steel production, require a large amount of energy per unit of product, and are the best candidates on which to focus energy-efficiency efforts.

Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program works to improve the energy intensity of U.S. industry through coordinated research and development, validation, and dissemination of innovative energy efficiency technologies and practices. 

Through partnerships with industry and other stakeholders, this program reduces environmental impacts   and reliance on foreign oil; increases use of renewable energy; improves competitiveness and process yield; and conserves resources.

The program works with industry through a competitive solicitation process, providing financial assistance to selected research, development and demonstration projects that can dramatically accelerate the pace of technology innovation.
