Finding Low-Cost Health Care 101

If you find yourself without health insurance or are unable to afford medical services, the following list of resources can help you gain access to health care services:

Community Health Center Locator
Find community health centers, migrant health centers, public housing primary care projects and other sources of health care funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through this site. You can search by location, types of program and types of service.

Eldercare Locator
The Eldercare Locator—toll-free at 800-677-1116–is a nationwide directory assistance service designed to assist older persons and caregivers in finding local support resources for aging Americans to help them remain independent in their own homes. It can also help caregivers find ways to get a well deserved break. The Eldercare Locator will provide names and phone numbers of organizations within a desired location, anywhere in the country, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 8 pm Eastern Time. For TDD/TTY, access the relay service at 202-855-1234, or to reach a live operator, call 202-855-1000.

Eye Care America Exit Disclaimer
EyeCare America (ECA) offers nationwide eye care programs for seniors and sufferers of diabetes and glaucoma. More than 7,500 ophthalmologists volunteer to see ECA patients. Helplines operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Information Center
The HRSA information center provides publications, resources and referrals on health care services for low-income, uninsured individuals and those with special health care needs via a comprehensive Web site or a toll-free number: 1-888-Ask-HRSA. More specifically, users will find detailed listings of facilities that provide free or reduced-cost health services, information on sites that provide comprehensive primary health care services for people living with HIV, listings of dental providers who provide care to people living with HIV, organ donor cards, etc.

Hill-Burton Free and Reduced Cost Care at Hospitals
Did you know that nursing homes and other facilities are required to provide a specific amount of free or below cost health care to people unable to pay? Eligibility is based on the size of your family and your income. You apply for Hill-Burton care at the facility where you were or will be treated.

Insure Kids Now!
This national campaign links the nation's 10 million uninsured children—from birth to age 18--to free and low-cost health insurance. The campaign puts families in direct contact with state children's health insurance programs through this Web site, the toll-free hotline 1-877-KIDS-NOW, and other outreach.

Medicaid
Medicaid is a program that pays for medical assistance for certain individuals and families with low incomes and resources. This program assists States in providing medical long-term care assistance to people who meet certain eligibility criteria. Medicaid is the largest source of funding for medical and health-related services for people with limited income.

Medicare: Extra Help for People With Limited Income
The Social Security Administration and the HHS Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are working together to provide persons with limited income and resources extra help paying for their prescription drugs. A new Medicare Prescription Drug Program offers help with prescription drug costs. The new program gives you a choice of prescription plans that offer various types of coverage. You may be able to get extra help to pay for the premiums, annual deductible, and co-payments related to the new Medicare Prescription Drug Program - an average of $2,100 in extra help.

Medlineplus Health Information
Medlineplus offers a detailed listing of directories, online physician locators, blood bank locators, assisted living or residential care facility locators, hospital directories and more.

Mental Health Services Locator
Find treatment facilities and support services, consumer, family, and advocacy organizations, state agencies, programs funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and more, through this site.

The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
Administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this program helps low-income, uninsured and underserved women gain access to lifesaving screening programs for early detection of breast and cervical cancers. This site can help you locate free or low-cost mammogram and Pap tests from your local breast and cervical cancer program.

National HIV Testing Resources
Web site offers information related to HIV testing that includes a national database of HIV testing sites, resources for people who test positive for HIV, basic information about HIV and AIDS, behaviors that place a person at risk for HIV infection and what the testing experience is like.

Pregnancy Care for the Disadvantaged
Are you pregnant but financially disadvantaged? If you are pregnant, programs in your State can help you have a healthy baby. These programs offer medical care, support and advice for pregnant women, information about health insurance and other services you and your baby may need.

State and Local Health Departments
This site offers a detailed list of state public health agencies with additional links to local public health services.

Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator
This searchable directory of drug and alcohol treatment programs will show the location of facilities around the country that treat alcoholism, alcohol abuse and drug abuse problems. The Locator includes more than 12,000 residential treatment centers, inpatient drug treatment and alcohol treatment programs and outpatient treatment programs for drug abuse and addiction and alcoholism. Listings include treatment programs for marijuana, cocaine and heroin addiction, as well as drug and alcohol treatment programs for teenagers, adolescents and adults.
