  How long does it take to process a replacement Social Security card?
  Question
  I applied for a replacement Social Security card but have not received the card.  When should I expect to receive my new card?
  Answer

We can't estimate how long it may take to replace a Social Security card. We're working harder than ever to protect you, prevent identity theft, and ensure the integrity of your Social Security Number. To do that, we may have to verify documents you present as proof of identity. How quickly we issue the card may depend on how quickly we can verify the documents.

Our offices can assist applicants by the following methods:

  • Issuing a notice acknowledging the SSN application while documents are being verified;
  • Sending an SSA-7028, "Notice to Third Party of Social Security Number Assignments," to an employer or other interested third party once an SSN has been assigned.

For information about the status of your (or your child's) replacement card, please contact our toll free number, 1-800-772-1213. You can speak to a representative from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. on business days.  Our 800-number telephones generally are less busy during the early morning from 7 A.M. to 9 A.M. and in the late afternoon and evening from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. We encourage people to call during these times to avoid busy signals and extended wait periods.

Our phone lines are also busiest early in the week and early in the month. You can help us serve you better by having your Social Security number handy when you call.

If you prefer, you may contact the Social Security office where you applied for the replacement card for assistance. Our representatives will be glad to help you.
