May Activity Report
**The next meeting of the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission has been scheduled for June 19, 2002. It will be held in the FAA Auditorium, 800 Independence Avenue, SW in Washington, D.C., 3rd Floor.**
The new Centennial of Flight Commission brochure is being printed and will be available for distribution May 20, 2002.
Memoranda of Agreement with the U.S. Air Force, 3 Roads Communications and Aviation Specialty Resources, Inc. have been signed.
Memoranda of Agreement are in the signature loop with the Chicago Centennial of Flight Commission and Mr. Greg Herrick, President of the Aviation Foundation of American, Inc. Mr. Herrick is planning to recreate the National Air Tours in the fall of 2003.
Dr. Ned Preston, FAA Historian, retired May 14, 2002. He has been a significant contributor to the Centennial of Flight planning efforts.
Partnership Updates
NBAA
has provided a free booth to Aviation Specialty Resources, Inc. for EBACE in
Geneva from May 28-30, 2002. Mr. Winninger has offered to present information
and hand-outs on behalf of other Centennial organizations. Please contact him
if you are interested.
The NASA History Office is publishing “Monographs in Aerospace History Number 26, June 2002.” This is a bibliography commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first powered flight. It was originally compiled by Arthur Renstrom, but this publication includes additional contributions by the Library of Congress, as funded by a COFC contract. The publication will include the COFC logo.
The International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) has reserved space on its calendar for a history of aeronautics session at its 23rd Congress to be held in Toronto, Ontario, on September 8-13, 2002. ICAS is closely aligned with the AIAA and has asked the AIAA History Committee to organize a history session for the conference. More information is available on the ICAS Web site at www.icas.org.
In celebration of the centennial of powered flight, the AIA has teamed with the National Association of Rocketry to sponsor the “Team America Rocketry Challenge,” a rocket design and launch contest for U.S. high school students. The five winning student teams will share a total prize pool of approximately $50,000 in savings bonds. Their schools’ science departments will share $9,000 in cash. The fly-off competition will be held in Northern Virginia in April 2003.
AIAA is planning “A Celebration of Apollo on the 30th Anniversary of Apollo 17.” The event will be held at the National Air and Space Museum. The NASA Alumni League, the Association of Space Explorers and other aerospace organizations will participate.
GAO is conducting their annual audit of the COFC again.
Outreach Activity:
Debbie Galloway met with a representative of the Washington Times on May 7 to discuss the development of centennial of flight related educational materials for “Class Act, The Washington Times Newspaper in Education Program.” These materials are used by hundreds of thousands of educators and millions of students each year.
The Commission is participating in ongoing meetings with the Department of Education and NASA’s Education Division concerning the development of a VIP centennial of flight educator package that will be distributed in late fall. The package includes a new poster, an educator’s guide and bookmarks. Additional materials are being considered. The two Wright brothers’ posters are being revised and will be reprinted.
The Civil Air Patrol has requested the right to use the COFC logo on the Wright brothers packets that they will be sending out to teachers.
CRT is scheduling a teleconference with the National Park Service and Keith Ifould, Director Group Business Development, RAF Museum, about potential cooperative efforts.
The Commission has been contacted by Don Fraser, Director of Marketing Services, Aerospace Australia Limited, about the 2003 Australian International Airshow (www.airshow.net.au).
Purdue University enlarged its longstanding association with Amelia Earhart by becoming the largest, most comprehensive repository of materials relating to the life, career and mysterious disappearance of the famous aviator. CRT has contacted Purdue.
The Port of San Diego and Lindbergh Field Air Terminal have requested the use of the COFC logo in conjunction with their Centennial celebration plans.
Media Relations
NASA has agreed to provide clipping service support to the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission. We are very grateful.
CRT conducted a Los Angeles media tour to meet with media outlets in LA. CRT met with Jay Leno and the Tonight Show, who is interested in discussing ways in which they can participate in the Centennial celebration and are looking for fun, crazy ideas. If you have any suggestions, please contact CRT.
CRT also met with several people who have celebrity connections and can help us engage celebrities in the celebration. CRT will be following up with these people as we move forward.
CRT has been in contact with Susan Durr, Marketing Communications Specialist, Daily Herald. She is creating a special historical 36 page section of their newspaper to celebrate the centennial of flight.
The N.C. Director of Travel, Film & Sports Development worked with Good Morning America to broadcast live from N.C. on April 29, 2002.
Web site
New additions to our Web site include The Wright Experience’s “In Depth: The Tunnel,” two articles on Charles E. Taylor, and five new categories of essays in The History of Flight section.
Two Web enhancement procurements were awarded April 29, 2002, one to the Wright Experience, and the second to David Garrigus Video and Film Productions.
Popular Mechanics Magazine has asked to add a link to the COFC Web site from their Web site.
The Air Transport Association has created a link from their Web site to the COFC site.

Completed Events:
The Commission on the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry met on May 14, 2002. The President’s Commission on the Future of the Aerospace Industry traveled to China and Japan and took commemorative Centennial of Flight medals from C. Forbes, Inc. with them.
Debbie Galloway attended a National Coalition for Aviation Education Meeting on May 14, 2002. Each member organization will be asked to provide information about their participation in centennial of flight activities.
The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau and the EAA unveiled their marketing plan for 2003 at the Outer Banks on May 8, 2002.
We presented to the AIA Communications Council meeting on May 8, 2002. The audience was senior public relations representatives from AIA member
companies. The presentation by Brian Ellis was well received, the audience was engaged and there were many questions that followed the presentation.
American Airlines Aviation Lecture Series featured “Celebrating a Century of Flight: The Wright Brothers and Flight Research 1900-1903” at the C.R. Smith Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 3, 2002. Cam Martin was the lecturer.
Space Day 2002 was celebrated on May 2, 2002, at the National Air and Space Museum and was sponsored by the Space Day Foundation. We have met with Linda Devillier, Ralph Caoopla and Brian Ewenson of the Space Day Foundation to begin discussions for Space Day 2003, which will have a centennial of flight theme.
Erik Lindbergh flew from Farmingdale, N.Y., to Le Bourget Airport, France, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of his grandfather’s famous 1927 voyage. He landed on May 2 after a 17-hour flight.
On April 24-25, 2002, more than 1,000 students and educators representing 21 schools and 14 regional districts participated in AeroExpo II, the second in a series of Ames Research Center-sponsored events celebrating the centennial of flight.
Debbie Galloway attended Federation Aeronautique Internationale Aviation and Space Education Commission Meeting April 24-27 and presented a summary of the Commission’s activities. She met with delegates representing the U.S., UK, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Australia and Spain. The committee has selected “100 Years of Powered Flight” as the theme of next year’s international art contest, which attracts thousands of students from over 20 countries each year. The committee also agreed to identify “Pioneers of Flight” from each of their countries. This information will be featured on the FAI Web site. Members were strongly encouraged to add aviation related events from each of their countries to the COFC Web site.
An Evolution of Flight committee meeting took place on April 24, 2002 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. This meeting took place in conjunction with the Global Air & Space 2002 International Business Forum and Exhibition. AIAA has made impressive progress on their Centennial plans.
First Flight Centennial Commission teleconference meeting was held April 22, 2002.
Met with the Director of Corporate Communication and the Director of New Business Development of ARINC. They are anxious to be part of the Centennial celebration and we are discussing possibilities for cooperative efforts.
Met with N. Dann Moss, President and CEO of Third Millennium Entertainment, to discuss our Media Patron program.
We met with officials of Wolf Trap to discuss their special 2003 production on the centennial of flight and are beginning to discuss ways in which we might work together.
