Lieutenant General David P. Valcourt assumed duties as Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command on February 25, 2008, after serving as Commanding General, Eighth United States Army.

Lieutenant General Valcourt is a native of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery (FA) on 6 June 1973. He has held a variety of command and staff positions.

Lieutenant General Valcourt's many staff assignments include service in Korea, where he served as Battalion Executive Officer for 2-17 FA from June 1986 until May 1987 at Camp Pelham. Lieutenant General Valcourt later commanded the 2-17 FA at Fort Sill, OK, and became the Army's first Paladin M109A6 Battalion Commander. From May 1996 until June 1998, he commanded the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) Artillery, III Corps, at Fort Hood, TX. Lieutenant General Valcourt next served as Chief, Operations Division, J-39, on The Joint Staff at the Pentagon. Following that assignment, he served as Assistant Division Commander (Maneuver), 2d Infantry Division in Korea from August 2000 to January 2002. From December 2003 to August 2005, Lieutenant General Valcourt served as Commanding General, United States Army Field Artillery Center and Fort Sill at Fort Sill, OK. From August 2005 to April 2006, he served as Acting Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Staff for USAREUR and Seventh Army. Lieutenant General Valcourt assumed duties as the Eighth Army Commander and Chief of Staff, United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/United States Forces Korea on 11 April 2006.

Lieutenant General Valcourt is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (1986); the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island (1994); and the British Higher Command and Staff Course at Shrivenham, England (2002). His civilian schooling includes two Master's Degrees: an MS in Physical Education from Springfield College, Massachusetts, and an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Legion of Merit (with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.
