2008 Conference, Web Casts
SAMHSA is engaged in several activities designed to improve substance abuse and mental health services in rural areas.
Conference. SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment and Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) help support the National Rural Alcohol and Drug Abuse Network’s annual conference. The event, the National Rural Institute on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, brings together rural alcohol and drug abuse professionals, Federal agency representatives, and nationally known institute faculty. SAMHSA provided scholarships to 30 participants at the June 2007 meeting. The Agency also supported a faculty member who addressed the special challenges of providing treatment on an American Indian reservation.
Next year’s event will be held in Menomonie, WI, from June 8 to June 11. For more information,

Web casts. SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services supported the
Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education’s development of a series of Web casts.
Designed to provide accessible training to mental health professionals
in rural areas, the 90-minute Web casts address topics such as telemedicine,
co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, and prevention.

Grants. CSAP’s Prevention of Methamphetamine Abuse grant program addresses the growing problem of methamphetamine abuse in rural areas. Other grants, such as CSAP’s Drug-Free Community program and Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grants program, don’t specifically target rural areas but include many grantees in rural communities.
