Fine Wine on a Beer Budget: How Science Data Systems Became Better, Cheaper and Faster Earth science data systems at NASA are shifting from large data centers which cater to the world at-large to small focused systems supporting individual science disciplines. These focused systems produce, analyze and distribute global products from a series of missions spanning decades in support of NASA’s key long-term measurement objectives at a fraction of the cost of larger data centers.
Over lunch, I’ll review the recent history of data processing for the Earth Observing System and examine the role budget, politics, technological advances, paradigm shifts and sheer pig-headedness have played in shaping today’s data processing landscape and the future of Earth science data systems. Finally, I’ll describe how science teams from SeaWiFS, MODIS and OMI are designing data systems to meet their needs in today’s highly competitive, low-budget, “security and project-driven” environment.
