Military Service Organizations and Veterans Service Organizations
February 24,2005 The February meeting focused on two major areas. Commander David Julian, director of operations, Military Severely Injured Joint Support Operations Center provided an overview of the center. Dr. Michael Kilpatrick, deputy director, Deployment Health Support, provided an overview of recently released medical reports. Cdr. Julian explained that the center opened February 1, 2005 and was established to provide a 24/7 hub for information, referral and tracking the severely injured service members. The center will augment the military services' programs by providing seamless support as long as needed to assure that injured service members and their families achieve the highest level of functioning and quality of life. Dr. Kilpatrick provided information on a study released by Environmental Health Perspectives, which looked at embedded weapons-grade tungsten alloy shrapnel, which was implanted in rats. Dr. Kilpatrick also discussed the report in Military Medicine, which examined a possible increase rate of testicular cancer in Gulf War Veterans. The next VSO/MSO roundtable meeting is scheduled for March 24, 2005, at 10 a.m.
