Information Resources

It is widely recognized that shared knowledge is the enabler of scientific progress.  This recognition, combined with the fact that scientific and technical information (STI) is a principal deliverable coming from the Federal government's R&D program, underscores the Department’s commitment to providing a wide-range of S&T Information Resources.   In support of this commitment, the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) fulfills its mission by providing leadership and coordination for the Department-wide Scientific and Technical Information Program.  OSTI therefore assures access by DOE, the scientific research community, academia, U.S. industry and the public to DOE research results.

OSTI has a collection of reports dating back to the 1940's with new information from DOE projects added daily.  In addition, OSTI has developed state-of-the-art systems for making full-text readily available in electronic form.  Key collections developed and maintained by OSTI on behalf of DOE, and accessible via the OSTI Web site, include the DOE Information Bridge, the Energy Citations Database, the E-print Network, DOE Research and Development Project Summaries, and EnergyFiles.  These resources, as well as the recently added DOepatents and Science Conference Proceedings, can be searched via a single query with OSTI’s new Science Accelerator interface.

In addition, OSTI represents DOE in partnering with other federal agencies in enabling e-government citizen access through a single Web portal on USA.gov.  This portal, Science.gov, provides a single gateway to over 1,800 sites and databases of federal R&D information from 13 Agencies.  OSTI provides access to DOE’s content on Science.gov, hosts the Science.gov Web site, and supplies the site’s “Deep Web search” capability.  WorldWideScience.org, a global science gateway to national science portals from participating nations of every inhabited continent, was also developed by OSTI in partnership with British Library and other sources. OSTI is the operating agent for the international Energy Technology Data Exchange and maintains a Web tool for searching foreign research literature.
