Dorothy Day, born November 8, 1897, at Brooklyn, New York, was the Editor and Publisher of the Catholic Worker, 115 Mott Street, New York City. It was founded in 1933, and this was also Day's home address as she lived and worked from this address in Chinatown. The Catholic Worker opposed compulsory military service and it had no connection to the Catholic Church . On June 3, 1938, Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin as joint tenants and trustees for the Catholic Worker purchased approximately 40 acres of land for a farm commune at North Hampton County, Easton, Pennsylvania. In July 1962, she applied for a passport for a three-month vacation in Brazil, traveling both ways by ship.
