Title: Syracuse HIV/AIDS Leadership and Capacity Development Program
Project Period: September 1, 2006 - August 31, 2009
Project Director: Gerald Richmond, Jr.

The Syracuse HIV/AIDS Leadership and Capacity Development Program targets 73 organizations in Syracuse and Onondaga Counties in New York including 23 identified minority-serving organizations and 50 other health and human service organizations in the Syracuse area which provide services to HIV clients. Through its partnership with the Central New York HIV Care Network and New York AIDS Coalition, the project reaches organizations serving African-American, Hispanic and Asian communities.

Project activities include intensive marketing and outreach. The project offers a 12-session leadership development series featuring an innovative management assistance model designed specifically for executive directors, senior managers, and volunteer leadership in community-based minority-serving organizations. This involves one-on-one executive coaching from a consultant of choice, limited to 12 individuals per session. Ten organizational growth and development seminars/workshops are provided for senior leaders, program managers, and volunteer leaders on topics such as: visioning and strategic planning; membership recruitment, retention and participation; board training; program development; stabilization and sustainability; management and operating systems; incorporation and governance, grant writing and fund raising; fiscal management; human resource policies and procedures; and legal issues including HIV confidentiality law. Technical assistance is also provided on resource products which provide reference materials and management tools that participants can take to their organization and share with others. One-on-one technical assistance is provided to 15 individual organizations to address specific needs and the use of evaluation mechanisms involving monthly case conferencing, reassessments, client satisfaction surveys, and case-closing exit interviews. Additionally one-on-one technical assistance includes strategies to address culturally sensitive approaches; promoting client behavioral change; testing, prevention, outreach and treatment services. Organizations who respond to the outreach effort are invited to attend a One Day Summit, which is held to introduce the project to the community.
