Title: Technical Assistance and Capacity Development Demonstration Grant Program for HIV/AIDS-Related Services In Minority Communities
Project Period: September 1, 2006 - August 31, 2009
Project Director: Riva Okonkwo

The Families Under Urban & Social Attack, Inc. targets community-based organizations that primarily serve African Americans in an eight county region of Texas. Each year, 30 organizations receive technical assistance and training services that enhance their ability to initiate and/or expand HIV prevention and care services.

Based on organizational assessments, the project offers training, seminars, technical assistance, capacity building and networking meetings. A series of training/seminars and one-on-one technical assistance in areas such as organizational capacity and infrastructure, organizational and staff cultural competency, and knowledge and skills related to HIV and HIV services are conducted. Capacity development assistance focuses on planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating HIV prevention and care services. Each participating organization receives a maximum of 56 hours of training in areas such as resource development, fiscal management, board development, networking and collaboration, staff recruitment, training and retention, information dissemination/marketing/public relations, service delivery, evaluation and quality assurance, computer and management information, proposal writing, non-profit and legal regulations, infrastructure, mission/goals/objectives, outcomes and evaluation, strategic planning and internal and external communication fundraising, information technology, community involvement and coalition building. Monthly networking meetings allow participants to develop collaborative relationships and exchange information on their organization’s progress. Organizations also receive a maximum of 20 hours of individual technical assistance, guided by an initial self-evaluation and subsequent action plan.
