Under Secretary Karen Hughes: Travel to Indonesia and Malaysia



Office of the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs

Under Secretary Karen Hughes traveled to Indonesia and Malaysia from October 20 through October 24, visiting Jakarta, Aceh, and Kuala Lumpur.

During her trip, Under Secretary Hughes met with students, non-governmental organizations, and senior government officials and attended several Iftaar dinners to hear their views and to discuss common interests and challenges. She also viewed reconstruction efforts in Aceh.

Under Secretary Hughes returned through Honolulu, Hawaii, on October 25, where she spoke at the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs Chief of Mission and Public Affairs Officer Conferences and met with students at the East-West Center. While in Honolulu, Ms. Hughes also met with Governor Linda Lingle to discuss America’s public diplomacy efforts in the Asia Pacific region.
