Our Lady of the Lake University, in partnership with the Guadalupe Community Center, San Antonio Independent School District's Lanier High School and the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department, operates the Community and Family Life Center on the West Side of San Antonio. The program targets 25 at-risk, primarily Hispanic students, ages 13-15. The interlocking program design addresses academic development, personal development, family bonding, cultural enrichment, recreational enrichment, and career development through an academic year and three-week summer academic enrichment program. Academic development activities focus on the enhancement of cognitive and study skills, with emphasis placed on reading. Activities include individual and group tutoring employing techniques used to build self-esteem and self-efficacy, counseling, and mentoring. Personal development activities promote the students' social, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being with a focus on bilingualism. Topics include self-esteem, stress reduction, conflict negotiation, communication skills, daily living skills, and healthy lifestyles. Family bonding activities focus on improving social support networking, family relationship building, and empowerment. Cultural development activities promote awareness of and appreciation for the students' heritage, traditions, values, and norms, as well as those of diverse populations. Among the activities are workshops, field trips to area art museums and the San Antonio Mission trail, and a community service project. Recreational enhancement activities promote recreation and leisure, healthy lifestyles, and interpersonal skills and include participatory and spectator sports, movies, and field trips (e.g., the rodeo, Fiesta Texas, Sea World). Career development activities provide youth with skills necessary for job readiness and/or promote skills and knowledge through exploration in a specific field. Resume writing, interview skills and guest speakers are part of the curriculum. Students from University serve as mentors, assist participants with homework, act as counselors, and participate in other aspects of the program.
