| The LeMoyne-Owen College Family Life Center will offer violence prevention programming and activities to 35 low income third through fifth grade African American boys at Cummings Elementary School who have C and below averages and/or who have behavioral problems. The goal of the program is to provide participants with opportunities for development, enrichment and enhancement in the areas of academic development, recreational enhancement, cultural development, family bonding, career development, and personal development. Each participant is assigned a mentor to follow him through the duration of the project and beyond, if feasible. Academic tutorial programs are offered in reading, mathematics, and science. Tutorial assistance is also provided with writing, listening, speaking, and homework. The recreation enhancement component includes participation in health fairs and recreational sports/activities. Cultural development activities are designed to enhance the students' sense of pride for their own culture while exposing them to a variety of other cultures through food, music, and dance. Outings to museums and libraries are other activities used to enhance cultural awareness/pride. Family bonding activities focus on building positive relationships between the parent and child; creating family unity, loyalty, and resiliency; and improving parenting techniques and skills. Career development activities such as career fairs and college days, expose students to various careers/professionals, and assist them in identifying career interests. Personal development activities focus on student health awareness, leadership skills, and etiquette, with group and individual therapy provided. College staff, faculty and students along with members of the neighborhood and broader community participate as mentors and tutors, as well as assisting in other aspects of the program. |
