| The goal of the ¡CONECTATE! (to get connected, to be involved) Family Life Center (FLC) is to reduce the incidence of violent and abusive behavior in a low income, largely Hispanic community of Fullerton, California in collaboration with the Fullerton School District and a number of community partners. The target population is 40 fourth grade students from the Richman and Woodcrest Elementary Schools, with the FLC located on the campus of Richman Elementary. Services are provided to 20 students from each of the target schools, and their families. The program operates an after-school program, once a month weekend family events, and a three-week summer enrichment program. The after-school program includes such activities as: Adventure Club which is designed to build self esteem and leadership skills; I Can Do It which focuses on self-help and safety skills; I'm Peer Proof which teaches assertiveness skills necessary to build positive friendships, recognize antisocial or dangerous behavior, and resist negative pressure from peers; I'm Taking Care, a self-reliance program; Smoke Signals, a tobacco-use prevention course; Youth for Arts which offers instruction in drama, issue-based theater, gift making, creative writing, dance, music, improvisational comedy, and stage make-up; Children's Group which focuses on improving communication skills, conflict resolution, anger management and positive self-esteem; long-term, in-class tutorial assistance provided by California State University Fullerton (CSUF) college students who also serve as mentors; community service projects; health education; and recreational activities. The academic year program also includes parenting classes on such topics as preventing violence in the home, stress management, healthy ways for dealing with anger, effective discipline, and communication skills; fatherhood, a family strengthening parent education program; educational and cultural weekend field trips for project youth and their families; and a CSUF faculty and student speakers' bureau. The three-week summer enrichment program held at CSUF features recreational and athletic activities, and the exploration of visual and performing arts. |
