Designed to empower individuals and to promote accountability among health care providers, the American Hospital Directory enables people to look up a hospital on the Internet and see its general characteristics, services provided, financial information, utilization statistics and other useful information. Information is taken from public use files, and the site is continuously updated to provide the most current and accurate information available from Medicare cost reports and billing data. Although this information has been publicly available for some time in the form of costly publications and commercial data services, this marks the first time that it is readily available as a free Internet service. Over 650 people use the free service every day. These include individuals who may want to look up contact information for hospitals in a community as well as those who are looking for hospital information to guide their own decision-making. Professionals use the resource for clinical benchmarking, market share analysis, strategic marketing, risk contracting, and other applications. There is also an economical subscription service available for those who want detailed information at $295/year. American Hostpital Directory won the following award in the Games: Washington, DC (April 28, 1998):
