Commissioned Corps Officers Serve in a Humanitarian Mission Aboard the
USNS Mercy
A multidisciplinary team of officers in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is serving on the USNS Mercy, a U.S. Navy hospital ship, for a humanitarian-assistance mission in the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia. The ship departed on May 22, 2008, from its homeport of San Diego, CA.

The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps offers a new $25,000 accession bonus for nurses who sign a 4-year active-duty agreement. For nurses who sign a 3-year active-duty agreement, the Corps offers an accession bonus of $20,000.

The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps offers a new $30,000 accession bonus for pharmacists who sign a 4-year active-duty agreement. Newly commissioned pharmacists who are called to active duty (CAD) may be eligible for the bonus. Pharmacists may also be eligible for an annual $15,000 retention bonus.

Commissioned Corps announced a new accession bonus for dentists.Signing Bonus for Dentists
On August 6, 2007, the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps announced a new $60,000 accession bonus for dentists who sign a 4-year active duty agreement. On January 29, 2008, that new accession bonus was raised to $75,000. Newly commissioned dentists that are called to active duty (CAD) on or after January 29, 2008, can be eligible for the bonus. Officers on USNS Comfort and Local Residents Honored With Visit by former Acting Surgeon General Moritsugu
Commissioned Corps officers serving on the USNS Comfort recently hosted a distinguished visitor: former Acting U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu. During one of his last trips before his retirement at the end of September, RADM Moritsugu traveled to the ship in the Caribbean September 19-21 to show his support for his officers participating in the Comfort’s humanitarian mission. The Surgeon General’s visit also demonstrated the U.S. Public Health Service’s commitment to collaborating with other uniformed services in their shared mission of protecting and improving public health. His visit was a one of his last official trips ending an extraordinary career that included 37 years in the U.S. Public Health Service. Read more

A multidisciplinary team of officers in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is serving on the USS Peleliu, a multipurpose amphibious ship on a medical, dental, public health, and humanitarian-assistance mission in Southeast Asia and the Western and Outer Pacific Islands. The ship departed San Diego on May 23, 2007. In addition to providing humanitarian assistance, the team will help build the public health infrastructure in communities near where the ship docks. A team of 17 U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officers is serving on the USNS Comfort, a U.S. Navy hospital ship that departed Norfolk, VA, on June 15, to begin a medical, public health, and oral health mission in Latin America and the Caribbean. Read more
