Winter snow and fog hang over the state of Washington in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, taken by the Aqua satellite on February 12, 2004. In the true-color image, the snow is a brilliant white, clinging to the peaks of the Cascade Mountains. The fog is a duller white, hovering over the desert plain east of the mountains. The difference between fog and snow is easier to see in the false color image, where snow is dark red and fog is white and peach. In both images, MODIS has detected a few fires, which have been marked with red boxes. The image shows, from top to bottom, British Columbia, Canada, Washington, Oregon, the top of California (left) and Nevada (right), and, along the right edge, Idaho.
