A few scattered fires burned across the southeastern United States on December 20, 2004. The fires, marked with red dots, are probably agricultural fires. In the upper right corner of the image, the lower reaches of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina are dusted with snow. This true-color image was acquired on December 20, 2004, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
