These true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from late August 2002 show scattered fires (red dots) burning across western Russia and eastern Europe. In the image from August 25, 2002, the Black Sea is at the bottom, with Turkey on the southern shore. Counter-clockwise around the Black Sea are Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. Ukraine covers most of the area north of the Black Sea. Some of western Russia is visible at right. On August 26, 2002, the image is centered farther east, showing western Russia (roughly the eastern third of the image) and (bottom to top in western portion of the images) Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. At upper left is the Baltic Sea. At bottom left edge, the northernmost tip of the Sea of Azov is barely visible through the smoke from the fires.
