This true-color Terra MODIS image depicts the United States Middle West, including fourteen states and three of the Great Lakes. The scene is unusually free of obscuring cloud cover, and allows a clear view of a number of Midwest cities and the nation’s transportation infrastructure (highways). Though these details are best viewed at the image’s higher resolutions (500 m and 250 m), highways are visible even at the 1 kilometer resolution as faint lines crossing the green pasture and crop lands of the nation’s center.

A number of large cities are visible in the image as beige-gray splotches. On the western shore of Lake Michigan (center top) is the city of Chicago, Illinois, while almost directly south of Lake Michigan is the city of Indianapolis, Indiana. On the border of Missouri and Illinois is the city of St. Louis (middle left). In between Lake Huron (top right) and Lake Erie (below Lake Huron) and on the shores of Lake St. Clair (between Huron and Erie) sits the city of Detroit, Michigan. This image was acquired August 8, 2002.
