Fires in Western Russia

South of the Gulf of Finland, Lake Ladoga, and Lake Onega (west-east), skies over eastern Europe and Western Russia are thick with smoke from numerous wildfires (red dots) that have been plaguing the region off and on for months. Among the cities suffering with poor air quality are St. Petersburg, on the eastern shore of the Gulf and Moscow, more easily seen in bottom center of the high-resolution image.

This image was acquired on August 27, 2002, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the NASA's Terra satellite.
