QuickStart: Subscribing to the Podcasts

If you already subscribe to podcasts and are familiar with the procedure, you can subscribe to the Plains to Peaks podcasts here:

If you are not familiar with the procedure please see the instructions below.

What Are Podcasts?

Podcasts are audio recordings that you can download to your computer or personal audio (MP3) player. Examples of MP3 players include the iPod, the Creative Nomad, etc. You will need audio software on your computer to listen to the podcast or transfer to your MP3 player. You can view more information from a PowerPoint presentation here.

What Do I Need to Listen to a Podcast?

You will need a computer, an Internet connection and podcasting software (there are many free podcasting software applications available). You can listen to the podcasts on your computer, or you can download the files to your portable audio player (also called an "MP3 player") to listen to them while you're "on the go."

How Do I Listen to a Podcast?

To listen to the audio on your computer, you need to have an audio application that will play MP3 files. This includes Windows Media Player, QuickTime, or RealAudio.

To listen to the audio on your personal audio player (MP3 player), you need to download podcasting software. There are many free or commercial podcasting applications available for download. One of the most popular is iTunes.

You can also download a podcast application like iTunes to your computer and listen to the podcasts on your computer using that application.

How Do I Subscribe to a Podcast?

You can "subscribe" to a podcast so that you automatically receive the podcasts in your audio software as new podcasts become available. This eliminates the need to check for "new" podcasts on the MCR website. To subscribe the Plains to Peaks Podcast:

  1. Click on the Pod icon.
  2. Copy the Internet address at the top of your browser window. The Plains to Peaks Podcast address is: http://nnlm.gov/mcr/services/podcasts/mcrpod.xml.
  3. Paste the address into your podcast application. For instance, in iTunes, go to the Advanced menu, choose "Subscribe to Podcast...", and paste the address into the dialog box. iTunes will then download the podcast files for you to listen to at your leisure.
