Carol Russo, Ph.D.

photo of carol russo Carol Russo is Director of Aeronautics at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Glenn Research Center. She is responsible for programs that develop advanced propulsion technologies for safer, cleaner, quieter, and higher performance jet engines. Her work involves partnerships with U.S. industry, academia, and other Government agencies.

Dr. Russo began her career in aviation in high school when she received her private pilot's license in a seaplane. She studied at Boston University and received her BS, in Aerospace Engineering, summa cum laude in 1968. She then went on to earn her Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics from Harvard University in 1975.

Prior to joining the Glenn Research Center, Dr. Russo had 20 years of industrial experience at General Electric Aircraft Engines both in Lynn, MA and Evendale, OH. She has an international reputation in aeropropulsion with special achievements in turbomachinery and artificial intelligence. She is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. She owns and flies the Piper J-3 airplane in this photo.
