South Carolina is home to the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site which was part of the early 50s cold war buildup .  Today, the Savannah River National Laboratory is involved in the development of highly sensitive detection methods to aid in nuclear nonproliferation and national security; the improvement of interim storage for nuclear waste; and in the continued progress of hydrogen research.
