President Bush to Recognize Wisconsin Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush met Cory Helland upon arrival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday, November 1, 2004. Helland, 27, is an active volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee.

President George W. Bush will meet Cory Helland when he arrives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday, November 1, 2004. Helland, 27, is an active volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee.

President Bush has called on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and he created USA Freedom Corps to help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 350 individuals around the country, like Helland, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

Helland has been a Big Brother to a nine-year-old boy for nearly two years. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States. Volunteers provide children with one-on-one time and attention in their communities, typically two to four times a month. In March 2004, Helland was awarded the Cargill Cares Volunteer Award from his employer.

Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
