Statement of Treasury Secretary John W. Snow in Recognition of National Volunteer Week

"One of the great responsibilities - and phenomena - that comes with economic prosperity is service to others. Americans are recognized as some of the most generous people in the world, and National Volunteer Week serves as a reminder that giving of ourselves by volunteering in our communities is an essential part of our social fabric and plays a critical role in shaping the future of our nation.

"During this year's National Volunteer Week, many members of the Treasury Department's team, myself included, will spend time with young students teaching them the value of financial savings. Financial education is an ongoing priority for the Treasury, and I'm proud that we will work toward that goal this week by engaging the minds of American youth, particularly tomorrow on National Teach Children to Save Day.

"The United States is the economic envy of the world, but that status is hollow if we do not rise to the responsibility of helping one another. The time invested in befriending neighbors, mentoring young people, and helping those around us who are in need is the best investment I know of.

"President Bush has emphasized and encouraged volunteerism with the establishment of the USA Freedom Corps and by highlighting acts of compassion wherever he travels in this great nation. When he announced USA Freedom Corps, President Bush issued a Call to Service, asking all Americans to serve a cause greater than themselves. Over the past four years, USA Freedom Corps has helped Americans answer that call. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 65.4 million Americans volunteered in 2005 - an increase of more than 5.6 million since 2002.

"My shared hope with the President is that volunteerism becomes more prevalent in this country every day - not just during National Volunteer Week, but every week of the year."
