On February 26, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen L. Johnson honored environmental activist Dorothy Green, a leader in California water policy, with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Administrator Johnson gave the award before speaking at the Faster Freight - Cleaner Air Conference in Long Beach, Calif.

LOS ANGELES - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Steve Johnson today honored environmental activist Dorothy Green, a leader in California water policy, with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

“Dorothy Green’s unwavering dedication to preserving the environment serves as an example of how individuals can help improve the life of entire communities,” said Administrator Johnson.  "She is truly an inspiration for others to follow."

Administrator Johnson gave the award before speaking at the Faster Freight - Cleaner Air Conference in Long Beach, Calif.  During his many visits across the country, Administrator Johnson will meet with individuals like Dorothy Green who have answered the call to volunteer service.

An activist and leader in California water policy for over thirty years, Dorothy Green’s many achievements include founding Heal the Bay, an environmental organization that protects Santa Monica Bay's water quality, and starting the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council.  Ms. Green also helped establish the Public Officials for Water and Environmental Reform, which sponsors the annual California Water Policy Conference that Dorothy has chaired for the past 17 years.  Recently, she helped launch the California Water Impact Network, whose goal is to move the state towards a sustainable water future.

President Bush has called on all Americans to make a difference in their communities through volunteer service. He created USA Freedom Corps, an Office of the White House, to strengthen and expand volunteer service.  Visit  or call 1-877-USA-CORPS to find an existing volunteer service opportunity in your area or to find information on national service programs such as the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Citizen Corps.

The President's Volunteer Service Award is available to youth ages 14 and under who have completed 50 or more hours of volunteer service; to individuals 15 and older who have completed 100 or more hours; and to families or groups who have completed 200 or more hours.
