Many States See Double-Digit Increases in Number of Peace Corps Volunteers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Peace Corps Volunteers are bringing experiences from almost every geographical area of the U.S. to their new second homes in countries like Bolivia, Botswana, and Bulgaria.

"The Peace Corps has been a success because Volunteers bring such diverse experiences to their service. Volunteers come from every corner of the United States, yet they all share a commitment to service in communities across the globe," said Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter.

This year, North Carolina had the highest overall increase in number of Volunteers, as 37 more residents joined the Peace Corps. Today, there are 220 Volunteers from North Carolina serving around the globe. With 902 Volunteers currently in service, California continues to produce the greatest number of Peace Corps Volunteers annually.

Again this year, Vermont has the highest per capita number of Volunteers in the field, as one out of every 9,000 Vermont residents over age 18 currently serve. The number of Volunteers from North Dakota increased 44 percent over last year, as 23 North Dakotans are proudly serving in the Peace Corps.

States that had double-digit increases in number of Volunteers this year include: Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

The Peace Corps is celebrating a 45-year legacy of service at home and abroad. Since 1961, more than 187,000 Volunteers have helped promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of the 139 countries where Volunteers have served. Peace Corps Volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment.
