President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation Launch Radio PSAs to Encourage Americans to Volunteer

Washington, D.C. - The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), USA Freedom Corps, and the Corporation for National and Community Service joined forces today at NAB 2006 in Las Vegas, the world’s largest electronic media show, to celebrate National Volunteer Week by launching "Make a Difference. Volunteer." a new radio public service campaign aimed at encouraging more Americans to volunteer.

New members of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation recorded radio public service announcements that encourage their fellow Americans to give back by finding ways to volunteer in their own community by visiting www.volunteer.gov. The new campaign features the celebrity talents of singers Sara Evans and Michael W. Smith, actors Patricia Heaton and Stephen Baldwin, NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne, NFL great Darrel Green, and television hosts Myrka Dellanos and Art Linkletter. The campaign aims to demonstrate the importance of volunteering and the impact it can have not only on those who receive volunteer services, but also on volunteers themselves.

President Bush created USA Freedom Corps, an office at the White House, to build on the countless acts of service, sacrifice, and generosity that followed the attacks of September 11, 2001. When he announced USA Freedom Corps, President Bush called on all Americans to serve a cause greater than themselves. Over the past four years, USA Freedom Corps has helped Americans answer that call, and the American people are responding. More than 65.4 million Americans volunteered in last year – an increase of more than 5 million since 2002.

"Council members were selected for their strong track record of volunteer service," said Desiree T. Sayle, Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of USA Freedom Corps. "During their term on the Council, they will work to complement USA Freedom Corps’ mission by promoting volunteer service and by working, in their respective sectors, to expand that uniquely American spirit of neighbor helping neighbor."

"Citizen service is key to solving the challenges of today and of the future, from the continuing needs of youth to the aging of America," said David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which administers the Council. "These public servants are role models for millions of Americans in their 'day jobs,' and we hope they will also serve as role models in their commitment to giving back to their communities."
