DR. SHELLEY CANRIGHT

01.30.08

DR. SHELLEY CANRIGHT
Manager, Elementary, Secondary and eEducation, NASA
Headquarters

In her role as Manager of Elementary, Secondary and eEducation, Dr. Shelley Canright is committed to offering opportunities for all children to explore and develop their full learning potential. Canright oversees projects that support our nation's elementary and secondary schools. She believes providing engaging experiences and opportunities will "light the fire" and "fuel the passion" for a new culture of learning and achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. This grouping of skills is often referred to as STEM.

Canright continues NASA's tradition of supporting the country's educators who play a key role in preparing, inspiring, and nurturing the young minds of today. Under her direction, NASA supplies K-12 educators with tools, experiences and opportunities to further their education and participate in unique NASA learning activities. These experiences enhance the educators' knowledge of STEM and inspire pursuit of STEM careers. Ultimately, the elementary and secondary education programs support the role of educational institutions, which provide the framework to unite students, families and teachers for educational improvement.

Furthermore, powerful technologies are on the horizon that will enable new learning environments using simulations, visualizations, immersion, online game playing, intelligent tutors, learner networking, e-PD (e-Professional Development), digitized building blocks of content, and more. Canright's overarching goal within the eEducation assets that she manages is to leverage technology infrastructures to deliver exploration-related content to audiences while partnering with NASA's Mission Directorates, professional education organizations and others to create rich, effective learning experiences and connections for a range of audiences.

Canright received her bachelor's degree in early and middle childhood education and her master's degree in educational policy and leadership from Ohio State University. She earned her doctorate in instructional systems with certification in distance education from Pennsylvania State University. From local to federal-level positions, Canright has more than 20 years of experience in the field of education.
