OVERVIEW

DoD's Enterprise Portal, Defense Knowledge Online (DKO), provides user access to Net-Centric Enterprise Services as well as a full suite of portal services. DKO was adopted and derived from the renowned Army Knowledge Online (AKO) which is the Army's gateway to services, applications, and content.

The services DKO offers include:

  • User Access to NCES services including the DoD Collaboration Services
  • Organizational Web Sites and Knowledge Centers (virtual spaces)
  • Team Sites and Personal Sites for File Sharing
  • Webmail (Email address for life) with calendar
  • Groups - user or organizationally defined teams to support collaborative activities
  • Forums - threaded discussions
  • Single Sign On to hundreds of services and applications via DKO

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In June/July 2006 DISA formally "adopted" Army Knowledge Online (AKO) as the portal managed service provider for its NCES program — the DISA Director and Army CIO/G-6 signed a Memorandum of Agreement and an Inter-Service Support Agreement.

Joint Unsponsored Access to DKO (on AKO) for joint users is offered on a first come-first served basis for a total of 2 Million users on DKO-NIPRNET in January 2007.

The DoD IA Portal, Joint Knowledge Online ("JKO") (a portal for Joint Training and Education sponsored by Joint Forces Command), DISA's Intranet, the Business Transformation Agency's portal , and the National Military Command Systems Information Resources Management portal have all been migrated to DKO.

Significant hardware and software updates to the DKO Portal (from version Appian version 3.5 to 5.7) were completed on our SIPRNET portal on April 6, 2008 and on the NIPRNET version on June 4, 2008. These changes upgraded the portal to support service oriented architecture standards and specifications.

Planned Upgrades and Expansion

DKO will be upgraded and expanded to support up to 2.5 million users by 1 Oct 2008, and 3.5 million users by early 2010.
