Viking 1 Lander Raw Image EDRs on CD-ROM (PDS)

Description

This data set contains all the raw, or experiment data record (EDR), images taken by the Viking 1 Lander on one CD-ROM volume. A total of 3043 images were taken. The images include reference and calibration shots, multiple shots through different filters to produce color images, small sections and close-ups and large panoramic views of the surface of Chryse Planitia on Mars. All images are black and white and come with an attached PDS label which gives the image file structure and instrument parameters. The image browser contained on this volume is a hypertext based system that provides a simple quick-look capability. The system consists of an HTML page for each image that displays a GIF version of the image and its respective label data.

The CD-ROM has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g., PC, Macintosh, and Sun) may access the data. Specifically, it is formatted according to the ISO-9660 level 1 Interchange Standard. PDS provides software for displaying PDS format images on a variety of computer platforms.
