Email is sent and received twice daily on both the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer and ARSV Laurence M. Gould at about 0700 and 1600 MST. There are no restrictions on the types of messages that can be received, i.e., audio or image files. However, there is a limit of 75 kilobytes (KB) per file on all incoming and outgoing message traffic.
In addition, each cruise participant is allotted a cruise quota of 25 KB per day (compressed) multiplied by the number of days they will be aboard ship. If this quota is exceeded, any exceedance caused by personal email will be billed to the sender if the amount is greater than $10 U.S. At cruise end, a bill will be given to each person that has exceeded their quota. Payment of any outstanding balance should be made to the Marine Projects Coordinator (MPC) prior to disembarking the vessel.
Any questions regarding this policy should be directed to your cruise POC before departing for the vessel and to the Network Administrator once you arrive at the vessel.
If you are a grantee preparing for a cruise and will need to send business-related files or email in excess of the limits stated above, please discuss it with your RPSC point of contact in Denver as soon as these requirements are known.
Email address conventions
An email address consists of a person's first name and last name. For example, Jonathon Doe would be either jon.doe or jonathon.doe. If a nickname such as Jon does not work, try the full name as indicated above.
To send an email to someone on either vessel, address the message as follows:
For the Gould use the convention: firstname.lastname@lmg.usap.gov.
For the Palmer use the convention: firstname.lastname@nbp.usap.gov.
Please do not send any email to the ship prior to your arrival as your account may not be activated until after you embark the vessel. In addition, be advised that all disembarking grantee email accounts are removed the day after the vessel arrives in port.
