The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is interested in protecting the water resources of its reservation in Skagit County from overuse and degradation of water quality for the beneficial uses of the Tribe. They are concerned that pumping of ground water has depleted streamflows and caused seawater intrusion in parts of the Reservation. There is also concern that a landfill may be contaminating the ground-water system. In order to effectively determine optimum future land use, the Tribe needs updated streamflow and ground-water water-quality data to enter into a water-resources database.
To help the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community protect and manage their water resources, the USGS is measuring streamflow to see if there have been significant changes since measurements made in 1976, determining the general velocities and most likely directions of ground-water flow near the land fill, and analyzing chloride concentrations in well-water samples to determine if there is any significant increase in seawater intrusion in the ground-water system. The USGS is providing data sets from this study for the Tribe’s water-resources database.
