Near the Bremerton Naval Complex on Sinclair Inlet, elevated levels of various inorganic and organic chemicals have been found on land and in the sediments of the Inlet. To help the Navy evaluate the effectiveness of sediment remediation to protect fish and other species from mercury contamination, the USGS is examining the status of sediments, water, and biot in Sinclair Inlet. The USGS is estimating the magnitudes of sources of mercury at the Bremerton Naval Complex and is studying the processes in which elemental mercury is transformed into a bioavailable form.
