Understanding the extent of contaminants in urban rivers is key to assessment of human health risks and the restoration of endangered salmon in the Pacific Northwest. This equally true for the Sammamish River Basin in northeast King County, Washington, where a new wastewater treatment plant is being considered by King County. Information is needed about the water quality of the Sammamish River.
In cooperation with King County, the USGS is currently conducting a water-quality study of streams in the Sammamish River Basin. Water and sediment samples from up to 14 locations are being anaylzed for pesticides and metals to determine the water quality of the Sammamish River. King County can use the data to identify any areas of elevated contaminant concentrations for further ecological and human health assessments. The data is also useful to direct mitigation and restoration efforts in the basin.
