Fires in Mexico and Central America

On May 31, 2004, numerous fires were burning in southern Mexico across a broad that spanned the Pacific to the Altantic Coast at the latitude of Lake Chapala.

Through patchy clouds, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite got a peek at the progressing biomass burning season in southern Mexico and northern Central America on April 11, 2004. Actively burning fires detected by MODIS are marked in orange in this scene, which centers on the southern Gulf of Mexico (center top) and the Yucatan Peninsula (right).
