Qantas Airlines
Regulations on Carrying Laptops

The following information pertains only to Qantas flights:

On advice from the Australian Government, an additional security measure regarding the screening of laptop computers was implemented at domestic terminals on May 1, 2002.  The measure has also been implemented at international terminals in Australia and overseas.

The measure requires that screening officers conduct additional checks of laptop computers.

The laptop computer must be removed from its carry case and the battery must be removed from the laptop.  All three items will then be x-rayed separately.

The battery must be removed from the computer for the x-ray process to be effective.  The separation and reassembly of the laptop, battery and carry case is undertaken by the passenger, not the screening officer.
