Jun Young Chung Wins NIST Sigma Xi Best Poster Award
On March 6, 2008, Jun Young Chung, of the Combi Group, was awarded a Best Poster Award for his contribution to the 2008 NIST Sigma Xi PostDoc Poster Session. Jun’s poster, “Surface Wrinkling Metrology for Nanoscale Polymeric Materials,” was named to the top three of more than 95 posters submitted. Jun’s poster describes his work in the Mechanics of Complex Interfaces Project, where his research focuses on extending the NIST buckling metrology to accomplish new measurements of polymer mechanical properties, including residual stress and Poisson’s ratio.
Kazu Iida Wins Best Poster at GRC
Kazunori Iida, of the Combi Group, was awarded a Best Poster prize at the Physics and Chemistry of Microfluidics Gordon Research Conference (GRC), held July 15-20, 2007, in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. The award, sponsored by the journal, Lab on a Chip, is given to the poster that presents the most innovative research in microfluidics at the event. Kazu’s poster, "An Integrated Microfluidic System for Block Copolymer Micelle Formulation,” was coauthored by Thomas Chastek, Eric Amis, Michael Fasolka, and Kate Beers, and is on display in 224/B-Corridor, second floor. Please check it out! This is the second GRC Best Poster prize won by a Combi Group team member this year.
Michael Fasolka Receives University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering Distinguished Young Alumni Award
The University of Pittsburgh's School of Engineering honored Michael Fasolka with its Distinguished Young Alumni Award. This award is given each year to a Pitt Engineering alumnus who has made exceptional contributions to science and engineering in the early stages of their career. The award was presented on April 4, 2007 at the University of Pittsburgh during a banquet for awardees.
Kirt Page Receives Quadrant Award, Second Place
Quadrant, a global leader in the manufacture of high-performance thermoplastics and composites, awarded its Second Place scientific award to Kirt Page (University of Southern Mississippi) for his doctoral thesis, The Influence of Electrostatic Interactions on Chain Dynamics and Morphological Development in Semi-Crystalline Perfluorosulfonate Ionomers for Fuel Cell Applications. The Jury was impressed by Kirt's “rigorous characterization and deep understanding of the structure of functionalized polymer ionomers.” The Award was presented on January 20, 2007 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. The international invitation to submit entries was addressed to graduates with doctoral theses in the field of materials and processes related to engineering and high-performance plastics and composites, written during the period of August 1, 2005 through October 31, 2006. Christopher M. Stafford Quoted in C&E News
A highlight article published in the January 22, 2007 issue of Chemical & Engineering News includes Chris Stafford’s commentary on a recent paper in PNAS. Chris was interviewed to provide an expert's view on the work, which describes the use of focused ion beams to draw "exotic architectures" on the surface of PDMS that can "undergo wrinkling to add the desired surface texture."
"Measuring the Modulus of Soft Polymer Networks via a Buckling-Based Metrology" highlighted in Science Magazine (Wilder et. al., complete paper)
