TVA Conducts Annual Shoreline Inspections on Valley Reservoirs

July 24, 2008

TVA is currently conducting annual shoreline inspections along Tennessee Valley reservoirs to ensure that any use of TVA-managed property has a proper permit and that the land is being used for the benefit of the general public.

TVA staff patrol the reservoirs by boat and identify any violations of TVA permits and encroachments on TVA property.

TVA manages 11,000 miles of shoreline and supports many recreation activities on the property, including hunting, fishing, camping and bird-watching.

Examples of violations include private boat docks built without a TVA permit or not in compliance with TVA requirements.  Encroachments include buildings or roads constructed on TVA-managed property without permission that could interfere with other recreation activities.

When violations and encroachments are identified, TVA staff will work with affected stakeholders to resolve issues.  Voluntary compliance is always the preferred method of resolution.
