Browns Ferry Honored by American Nuclear Society

August 17, 2007

Awarded 2007 Utility Achievement Award

TVA’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant has been awarded a Utility Achievement Award from the American Nuclear Society for the successful restart of Unit 1.

Browns Ferry Site Vice President Brian O’Grady attended the ANS 2007 Utility Working Conference to accept the award on behalf of TVA.

The award citation reads, “The 2007 Utility Achievement Award for Outstanding Improvement in Performance is presented to Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in recognition of the most extensive restart effort in the nuclear industry, culminating in the successful return to service of Unit 1 as the first nuclear generating plant to come online in more than a decade.”

O’Grady, who has overseen Browns Ferry since May 2005, said the award is a reflection of the men and women who brought Unit 1 online.

“Any improvement in performance at Browns Ferry is a reflection of the workforce’s dedication to the nuclear industry. Browns Ferry employees not only started a unit that had not run since 1985, but also continued to operate the two other reactors at the site safely and reliably during the past five years. I am proud of the Browns Ferry team and TVA’s commitment to safe nuclear power.”

Browns Ferry’s award was one of two 2007 Utility Achievement Awards presented to the industry during the conference. Exelon’s LaSalle County Station also received the award. More than 500 nuclear industry leaders attended the ANS conference.

“This award highlights the professionalism of the Browns Ferry employees and our contract partners. TVA now has six reactors safely producing more than 6,500 megawatts for the Valley’s power needs,” said TVA Chief Nuclear Officer Bill Campbell. “Browns Ferry’s success with the Unit 1 restart and the recognition by the American Nuclear Society forecasts a positive future for the TVA nuclear program.”

This is not the first time ANS has honored a TVA nuclear facility. Sequoyah Nuclear Plant received the Utility Achievement Award in 2000, and Watts Bar Nuclear Plant received the award in 2001.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.7 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
