TVA’s Bull Run Fossil Plant Named Best in Nation

January 16, 2007

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – TVA’s Bull Run Fossil Plant is the most energy efficient coal- fired power plant in the nation for a second consecutive year, according to rankings compiled by a national utility-industry magazine.

Bull Run was ranked as the most efficient coal-fired power plant four of the last five years by Electric Light & Power magazine. The plant has ranked among the nation’s top 10 most efficient plants by the magazine every year since 1996.

The magazine annually ranks the top 20 generating units by various criteria. In the November/December 2006 edition covering calendar year 2005 performance, Bull Run, located near Oak Ridge, Tenn., won top honors for heat rate—a measure of the efficiency with which a plant turns fuel energy into electric energy.

Two other TVA coal-fired plants and two TVA nuclear power plants also were ranked among the top 20 generating units. Paradise Fossil Plant, in Drakesboro, Ky., was ranked 18th in the heat rate category. Cumberland Fossil Plant, in Cumberland City, Tenn., ranked 14th in net generation by coal-fired plants.

Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, near Chattanooga, Tenn., was ranked 7th and Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant near Athens, Ala., ranked 14th in net generation by nuclear power plants.

Bull Run is a single unit generating plant with a capacity of 889 megawatts. TVA operates 59 units at 11 coal-fired generating plants located throughout the Tennessee Valley.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.7 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
