TVA Renovating Honeycomb Campground

April 9, 2008

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. – TVA has begun renovating the Honeycomb Campground on Guntersville Reservoir and anticipates having it ready to reopen by the spring of 2009.

TVA revoked the campground operating license last November and took possession of the campground in January because of serious electrical violations that caused concern for the public’s safety.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation as we work to create a safe, enjoyable camping environment at the Honeycomb Campground,” Guntersville Watershed Team Manager Don Anderson said. “We are committed to providing high quality recreation experiences on TVA-managed public lands.”

TVA is currently cleaning up the site by removing items such as old decking and firewood and removing dead or dangerous trees. A new site design is being developed to improve the recreational experience, minimize environmental impacts, and improve the sustainability of the site for years to come. Other improvements planned for the campground include upgrading the electrical and water systems, bath houses and day-use area.

After TVA improves campground conditions, TVA will request proposals for a new campground operator.

“Once a new operator is identified, the campground is expected to reopen for the 2009 recreation season,” Anderson said.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self- financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 159 power distributors that serve approximately 8.8 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
